Thomas is known to many as a “celebrity dentist” amongst his peers. Dr. Thomas has worked with many A-list celebrities such as Chrisean Rock, Offset, Takeoff, Neyo, Tyga, Rich the Kid, Chief Keef, Michael Blackson, Amber Rose, Bobby Shmurda, 03 Greedo, Lil Xan, Inayah, sports superstars, influencers, actors and more.

Eager to learn more about his upbringing and background, we finally got a chance to sit down with the boss himself to get an exclusive on his journey with dental and cosmetic surgeries.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself… what was it like for you growing up?

“I was born in the small town of Douglas Georgia, where I stayed until I was about five years old. Shortly after, I relocated with my mother to New Jersey, and eventually moved to live with my father in South Florida.”

“Growing up under the household of a single mother of four, the ideas of tenacity, perseverance, and dedication were instilled in me early on. I watched my mother work four jobs to support us and move with the mindset of ‘make it happen by any means necessary.’ With that selfless spirit, my mother allowed me to move with my father where I would have better access to educational opportunities, which eventually led me to being selected to attend Howard University.”

Q. What prompted you to take up cosmetic dental surgery?

“I attended Howard University for a total of eight years. For both my undergraduate degree, in biology and chemistry, and my postgraduate degree as a doctor of dental surgery.”

“I chose dentistry because I wanted a career where I would truly develop relationships with my patient. It is the only medical profession where you should see your patients repeatedly throughout their lives. Not only do you see the patient, but the entire family becomes yours as well.”

“I enjoy the opportunity to establish a genuine rapport with my patients and grow with them. I love the challenge of beating what we deem ‘white coat syndrome’… the fear of a patient visiting a doctor’s office. I like my office to be an experience, a wonderful one, for my patients.”

Q. As a doctor of dental surgery, what obstacles have you faced while working within your profession and how did you overcome them?

“The biggest challenge in my profession is establishing patient trust. Most patients don’t visit the dentist for 1 of 4 reasons… fear, finances, lack of perceived need, or time.”

“I aim to identify which challenge or challenges suit my patients and come up with ways to overcome them. It’s very important that a patient understands that I genuinely care to deliver top-notch, quality dentistry with the best intentions in mind.”

Q. Everyday you get a chance to change the lives of others through dental care, providing them with a beautiful smile. Tell us, how rewarding is it to see their initial reaction when the final reveal is made?

“When I see patients respond to my work, I am both humbled, and pleased that I am serving and moving in my purpose. Especially when the patient remind me of my family members and look like those that I grew up with… a demographic that traditionally cannot afford ‘smile makeovers.’”

“ I am a firm believer that God put us on this earth to serve him, through service to his people. The patient response to the final reveal is a true reflection of dentistry being my ministry.”

Q. You revently debuted on Zeus Network with your very own relatiy show titled “ Smile LA.” Tell us, how did that opportunity come about and how has your overall experience been while filming?

“It was truly a pleasure to be able to work with Zeus Network on Smile LA. The entire team was extremely professional, competent, and welcoming. They made the experience of being a dentist on TV comfortable.”

“Even more so, I love the diversity of the team. It’s great to be surrounded by black excellence in such an unbalanced industry. The opportunity to work with Zeus actually came after working with many other celebrities, influencers, zeus talent and ownership.”

Q. How involved are you with the planning and the overall structure of the show?

“As an executive producer of the show, Zeus gave me a great amount of creative freedom along with the expertise of their editors and producers.”

“Overall, it was a team effort that made this collaboration a success. It was an honor to work with them and I look forward to a long-term partnership,” he added.

Q. As a doctor of dental medicine, you get to see a wide range of different smiles and also get a lot or nervous clients.  Tell us, what procedures and protocols do you take in order to provide comfort for your clients before surgery?

“The most important thing when dealing with a patient that may be fearful or anxious of dental treatment is understanding the etiology of it. Was it a result of bad dental experiences in the past?”

“Is it the sound, the pressure, the pain, or one of many other possible things. To ease patient, I offer both oral and IV sedation solutions for patients. We also can prescribe anti-anxiety medication’s before any dental treatment.”

Q. What’s one question or concern that you hear a lot from your clients?

“Most clients that I encounter are primarily concerned about the level of pain they will experience during treatment and/or the cost. I try to reinforce to patients that with proper numbing techniques and or by use of general anesthesia… pain usually isn’t a factor in my treatment.”

“When it comes to financial concerns, I try to accept most major insurances, offer dental financing and payment plan solutions, all while still maintaining use of the highest quality dental materials with the best long-term prognosis in mind.”

Q. Upon filming, did you have any concerns or worries about filming the show…. if so, what were they?

“The greatest challenge with doing the show is not just doing the dentistry, but ensuring that it goes right the first time, and within the timeframe allotted. I was pleased to be able to deliver the results that we were able to for each patient in less than 24 to 48 hours.”

“What’s amazing here, is that most of the audience doesn’t even realize that the work completed isn’t the final result.”

“Many patients are in temporary restorations while they heal from the surgeries. All patients on the show will continue to see me for follow ups and completion of their treatment and are welcomed to be routine patient of mine for as long as they wish.”

Q. For our readers who might be unfamiliar with the show… what can they expect when they tune in ?

“For those who have not tuned in yet, expect to hear and understand the stories and testimonies of those who have battled with dental issues and the psychological effects thereof.”

“I want viewers to be able to connect with each patient in some form or fashion, with hopes that they are more open and educated on their next steps relative to their dental experience. Even more so, most of these patients are undergoing dental treatments that traditionally they would not have access to. I want to highlight our stories!”

Q. What was your most memorable moment this season and why?

“The most memorable moment of the season was honestly the initial meeting where we green lit the show. This laid the foundation for the excellent work that was to come.”

Q. What advice could you give to our  readers who might be in search of getting cosmetic dental surgery?

“The most important thing to do when considering cosmetic dental work is to understand what you’re asking for and who you are asking to do it. As with any cosmetic surgery, you want to find a doctor who’s educated, well trained, and able to translate your vision of beauty into their work.”

“ It is important that we balance both function and aesthetics, when undertaking any dental procedures, rather cosmetic or not. Also understand what is being used on you during the procedures.”

“ Just like there are different levels of gold, diamonds, and many other materials… the same applies to dental materials….you want to work only with things that are biocompatible and built to last for the rest of your life.”
