ATLANTA - Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Police Chief Darin Schierbaum held a news conference Monday morning following a violent weekend in the city that left 29 people shot and two dead, including one person killed and 10 others wounded in a mass shooting early Monday morning on Edgewood Avenue in the historical Sweet Auburn neighborhood.

The incident occurred around 1:27 a.m. near the streetcar stop in the 300 block of Edgewood Ave., where police say a group of four suspects—three men and one woman—approached a crowd and opened fire. A 27-year-old man identified as Santos J. Wyatt was killed, and an 18-year-old male is in critical condition.
"This department will not rest until we identify who's responsible and bring those individuals to justice," Schierbaum said. He noted that officers recovered firearms and 34 shell casings at the scene and are working closely with the ATF.
The shooting on Edgewood was one of 12 separate gun violence incidents across Atlanta over the weekend, according to Atlanta police.
"When I look at what connected them... none has connected the other, other than individuals had guns when they were angry," Schierbaum said. "It seems to be the most common theme that we saw throughout the weekend."
The violence prompted Mayor Dickens to emphasize the city’s ongoing initiatives targeting youth engagement and violence prevention. "Our Mayor's Office of Violence Reduction and our Nightlife Division have both been throughout the community, providing training and resources while also keeping their ears to the ground," he said. "This work is about people. It is about the lives that are lost, the families that are shattered, and the communities traumatized by violence that should have never happened in the first place."
Officials said the suspects in the Edgewood shooting remain at large and that investigators believe many of those injured were likely innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.
"We're currently at 57 homicides," Schierbaum said. "That's counting the one that occurred this morning...versus 76 we had this time last year, 92 in 2022."

He said the police department is reviewing 911 calls and surveillance footage and emphasized that Edgewood, a bustling nightlife district, is already heavily patrolled.
"We’re assessing already today what needs to be adjusted to make sure we do not have a repeat of last night," Schierbaum said. "We do have officers that are in the vicinity... we do have cameras that are throughout the area."
City officials reiterated their appeal for community assistance and highlighted the role of conflict resolution and youth-focused programs in curbing violence.
"We're going to figure that out," said Dickens. "We know where the triggers were pulled. We don't know why the triggers were pulled."Multiple people shot along Edgewood Avenue
"All of a sudden we hear gunshots, gunshots, gunshots," one witness said. "And then to find out somebody actually got shot — it's really actually so sad. I started running. Not gonna lie, I was running — actually went down to the ground."
The victim’s body was visible in the street before the medical examiner arrived to process the scene.
According to police, the person who was killed was a 27-year-old man, who has been identified as Santos J. Wyatt. The other victims range in age between 18 and 29.
All the victims transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.
